Concepts
Ideas that structure The Small Bachelor by P. G. Wodehouse — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Love and Marriage
The book explores contrasting views on love and marriage, from George Finch's impulsive love at first sight to Hamilton Beamish's rational, calculated approach, while also satirizing societal pressures and parental interference in matchmaking.
Social Class and Status
Characters are judged by their wealth, profession, and social standing, as seen in Mrs. Waddington's disdain for artists and her preference for titled suitors like Lord Hunstanton, highlighting the superficiality of high society.
Deception and Appearances
The narrative is driven by schemes and misunderstandings, including Sigsbee Waddington's fake pearl necklace, Mullett's criminal past, and the various characters' attempts to hide their true intentions or identities.
Family Dynamics and Rebellion
The Waddington family illustrates strained relationships, with Molly rebelling against her stepmother's control, Sigsbee chafing under his wife's dominance, and the comedic tension between parental authority and youthful independence.
Art and Artifice
George Finch's identity as an artist is central, with the book satirizing the romanticized notion of the penniless artist versus the reality of his wealth, while also parodying pretentiousness in art and poetry through characters like Hamilton Beamish and Officer Garroway.
Money and Financial Anxiety
Financial schemes and worries drive the plot, from Sigsbee's disastrous stock investment and fake necklace to Mullett's reformed criminal past, underscoring how money (or the lack of it) influences relationships and social standing.
The West vs. East
The idealized American West is contrasted with Eastern urban sophistication, as Sigsbee Waddington romanticizes the West's freedom and simplicity, while George's Idaho origins give him a perceived authenticity that both attracts and complicates his place in New York society.
Authority and Rebellion
Characters frequently challenge or subvert authority figures, such as Mrs. Waddington's control over her household, the bumbling policeman Garroway, and the butler Ferris's secret journalism, creating comedic tension between order and chaos.
