# Yffim Beg — The Slaves of the Padishah character guide > Yffim Beg in The Slaves of the Padishah by Mór Jókai. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Yffim, the Beg **First appearance:** 0001-the-slaves-of-the-padishah ## Snapshot A Turkish officer whose nerves betray him at every turn, forever seeing armies where there are only washerwomen and earning the scorn of his own companions. ## Who they are Yffim Beg rides in the retinue of Feriz Beg, a soldier whose rank is undermined by a temperament unsuited to campaign life. When Azrael the odalisque mockingly convinces him that bleaching-linen girls are an enemy encampment, his panic exposes a deeper shame: he once fled Transylvania in terror from an enemy that did not exist. His credulous dread and his fear of Hassan Pasha's displeasure make him a comic yet pitiable figure whose cowardice quietly shapes the movements of the men around him. ## Relationships ### [Hassan Pasha](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_slaves_of_the_padishah_se/characters/hassan_pasha) _professional_ Hassan Pasha and Yffim Beg are Ottoman military commanders who coordinate campaigns and share strategic intelligence. ### [Azrael](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_slaves_of_the_padishah_se/characters/azrael) _professional_ Azrael and Yffim Beg work together in military operations, with Azrael handling executions and Yffim managing troops. ### [Prince Ghyka](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_slaves_of_the_padishah_se/characters/prince_ghyka) _rivalry_ Prince Ghyka and Yffim Beg are adversaries, as Ghyka seeks to undermine Ottoman control while Yffim enforces it. ### [Feriz Beg](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_slaves_of_the_padishah_se/characters/feriz_beg) _professional_ Feriz and Yffim are fellow Ottoman officers who cooperate on campaigns but compete for recognition and favor. ### [Michael Apafi](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_slaves_of_the_padishah_se/characters/michael_apafi) _professional_ Michael Apafi and Yffim Beg have a formal relationship as ruler and Ottoman envoy, with Apafi trying to maintain autonomy. ### [Hassan Pasha](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_slaves_of_the_padishah_se/characters/hassan_pasha) _professional_ Hassan Pasha and Yffim Beg are Ottoman military commanders who coordinate campaigns and share strategic intelligence. ### [Feriz Beg](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_slaves_of_the_padishah_se/characters/feriz_beg) _professional_ Feriz and Yffim are fellow Ottoman officers who cooperate on campaigns but compete for recognition and favor. ### [Azrael](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_slaves_of_the_padishah_se/characters/azrael) _professional_ Azrael and Yffim Beg work together in military operations, with Azrael handling executions and Yffim managing troops. ### [Hassan Pasha](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_slaves_of_the_padishah_se/characters/hassan_pasha) _professional_ Hassan Pasha and Yffim Beg are Ottoman military commanders who coordinate campaigns and share strategic intelligence. ### [Michael Apafi](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_slaves_of_the_padishah_se/characters/michael_apafi) _professional_ Michael Apafi and Yffim Beg have a formal relationship as ruler and Ottoman envoy, with Apafi trying to maintain autonomy. ### [Prince Ghyka](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_slaves_of_the_padishah_se/characters/prince_ghyka) _rivalry_ Prince Ghyka and Yffim Beg are adversaries, as Ghyka seeks to undermine Ottoman control while Yffim enforces it. ### [Feriz Beg](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_slaves_of_the_padishah_se/characters/feriz_beg) _professional_ Feriz and Yffim are fellow Ottoman officers who cooperate on campaigns but compete for recognition and favor. ## In the story ### [VII: The Panic of Nagyenyed](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_slaves_of_the_padishah_se/chapters/vii-the-panic-of-nagyenyed) The envoy of the Pasha of Buda who, while bathing, hears the panic and flees on a barebacked horse without his turban. ### [VIII: The Slave of Market at Budapest](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_slaves_of_the_padishah_se/chapters/viii-the-slave-of-market-at-budapest) Hassan Pasha's favorite, sent to choose slave-girls for the harem;
