**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Béldi, Master Paul Béldi

**First appearance:** 0001-the-slaves-of-the-padishah

## Snapshot

A Transylvanian nobleman whose political entanglements and principled stubbornness make him both a power broker and a prisoner of the era's brutal diplomacy.

## Who they are

Paul Béldi belongs to the restless circle of Transylvanian counsellors who must balance loyalty to their prince against the looming shadow of the Ottoman Porte. His presence in the council chamber alongside Bethlen, Kornis, and Csaky marks him as a man whose voice carries weight in the fractious politics of the principality. What makes him compelling is the tension between his patrician independence and the forces—Turkish, Austrian, and internal—that keep narrowing his room to manoeuvre, a pressure that will eventually cost him his freedom.
