# Olaj Beg — The Slaves of the Padishah character guide

> Olaj Beg in The Slaves of the Padishah by Mór Jókai.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Poor Olaj Beg, Merciful Olaj Beg, Gracious Beg

**First appearance:** 0015-xiv-olaj-beg

## Snapshot

A Turkish nobleman whose honeyed reassurances to Prince Apafi conceal a diplomatic menace, his excessive mercy a warning rather than a comfort.

## Who they are

Olaj Beg receives Prince Apafi's pleas on behalf of a persecuted, pregnant fugitive with such overflowing sympathy that the prince grows more anxious with every kind word. His repeated vows that the Sublime Sultan will be merciful ring hollow precisely because they are too generous, and Apafi reads the danger beneath the flattery. As a representative of Ottoman power in Transylvania, Olaj Beg embodies the velvet glove over the iron fist, and his scene with Apafi sets the tone for the political dread that hangs over the Estates.
