# Michael Apafi — The Slaves of the Padishah character guide

> Michael Apafi in The Slaves of the Padishah by Mór Jókai.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Apafi, Master Michael Apafi

**First appearance:** 0001-the-slaves-of-the-padishah

## Snapshot

Prince of Transylvania, a ruler whose throne rests on Ottoman sufferance and whose every decree is shadowed by the Padishah's will.

## Who they are

Apafi reigns over a principality squeezed between the Habsburgs and the Sublime Porte, his authority real but perpetually contingent. He must balance Hungarian nobles, Turkish demands, and his own survival, knowing that a single misstep can cost him his throne or his head. His court is the political weather system of the novel: the storms that scatter its characters originate in his precarious, calculating reign.
