## Snapshot

A young bride of pale beauty and black pearl-laced tresses whose wedding joy is shadowed by her husband's sudden, unexplained terror.

## Who they are

Mariska, raised in a poor Wallachian village where her family dreamed only of a cow named Csákó, becomes the bride of Prince Ghyka and the object of bold courtly attentions at her own wedding. When her husband returns from camp pale and trembling, demanding she gather money and jewels for a possible flight, she hides her own fear and questions his old servant Jova. Her vulnerability and quiet courage place her at the heart of the novel's early domestic and political tensions.
