Azrael holds a strange power over the imbecile Hassan, who kisses her robe and sobs at her prophecy that his death will follow hers. She kneels with Mariska, files through a chain that proves to be glass beneath its silver varnish, and plots escape through a gobaea ladder over the sharpened stakes. Her uncanny certainty and resourcefulness make her the hinge on which the captivity narrative turns.
