# Joe Hardy — The Shore Road Mystery character guide > Joe Hardy in The Shore Road Mystery by Franklin W. Dixon. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Joe **First appearance:** 0000-i-stolen-cars ## Snapshot Fair-haired, a year younger, and quicker to volunteer for the riskiest assignment, Joe Hardy is the brother who finds the tunnel mouth while everyone else is still arguing. ## Who they are Joe is Frank's junior partner in amateur sleuthing, the one who scrambles down the beach with three troopers and signals back with a flashlight. He's brave to the point of recklessness, and the cave roundup shows why that matters: his willingness to split from Frank is what springs the trap. Without Joe's nerve, the Hardy boys' plans stay plans. ## Relationships ### [Frank Hardy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/frank_hardy) _family_ Frank and Joe are brothers and close partners in detective work, with Frank often taking the lead. ### [Chet Morton](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/chet_morton) _friendship_ Chet and Joe share a friendly, teasing bond as part of the Hardy Boys' circle. ### [Gus Montrose](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/gus_montrose) _rivalry_ Gus Montrose is also antagonistic toward Joe, viewing the Hardy brothers as threats. ### [Jack Dodd](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/jack_dodd) _friendship_ Jack Dodd is a friend to Joe as well, working together to solve the mystery. ### [Frank Hardy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/frank_hardy) _family_ Frank and Joe are brothers and close partners in detective work, with Frank often taking the lead. ### [Frank Hardy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/frank_hardy) _family_ Frank and Joe are brothers and close partners in detective work, with Frank often taking the lead. ### [Gus Montrose](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/gus_montrose) _rivalry_ Gus Montrose is also antagonistic toward Joe, viewing the Hardy brothers as threats. ### [Chet Morton](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/chet_morton) _friendship_ Chet and Joe share a friendly, teasing bond as part of the Hardy Boys' circle. ### [Jack Dodd](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/jack_dodd) _friendship_ Jack Dodd is a friend to Joe as well, working together to solve the mystery. ### [Chet Morton](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/chet_morton) _friendship_ Chet and Joe share a friendly, teasing bond as part of the Hardy Boys' circle. ### [Gus Montrose](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/gus_montrose) _rivalry_ Gus Montrose is also antagonistic toward Joe, viewing the Hardy brothers as threats. ### [Jack Dodd](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/jack_dodd) _friendship_ Jack Dodd is a friend to Joe as well, working together to solve the mystery. ## In the story ### [Stolen Cars](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/chapters/i-stolen-cars) Rides alongside Frank and Chet, commenting on the thieves' nerve and the impact on local activities. ### [II: Circumstantial Evidence](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/chapters/ii-circumstantial-evidence) Recovers from the spill, confronts the hay wagon driver, and observes the argument at the farm. ### [Under Suspicion](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/chapters/iii-under-suspicion) Echoes Frank's suspicion about who placed the fishing rod in the car. ### [Out on Bail](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/chapters/iv-out-on-bail) Joe shares Frank's conviction and offers to use reward money for bail. ### [V: More Thieving](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/chapters/v-more-thieving) Expresses surprise at the new car thefts and joins Frank in planning further investigation. ### [On the Shore Road](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/chapters/vi-on-the-shore-road) Accompanies Frank and Chet;
