# Frank Hardy — The Shore Road Mystery character guide > Frank Hardy in The Shore Road Mystery by Franklin W. Dixon. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Frank, Franklin, Hardy **First appearance:** 0000-i-stolen-cars ## Snapshot Sixteen, dark-haired, and methodical, Frank Hardy treats detective work as a calling inherited from his famous father—and a race against his own impatient instincts. ## Who they are Frank is the elder Hardy brother, a Bayport high schooler who has already helped his father crack cases the police couldn't. Where Joe leaps, Frank calculates, and that friction shapes how the brothers split up danger on the Shore Road. He wants to prove the family gift is real, not just a famous father's shadow, and the stolen-car case is his chance to do it without adult help. ## Relationships ### [Joe Hardy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/joe_hardy) _family_ Frank and Joe are brothers and close partners in detective work, with Frank often taking the lead. ### [Chet Morton](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/chet_morton) _friendship_ Chet is Frank's loyal and somewhat comic friend, often joining investigations with enthusiasm. ### [Gus Montrose](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/gus_montrose) _rivalry_ Gus Montrose is a suspicious character frequently at odds with Frank, often under scrutiny for criminal activity. ### [Jack Dodd](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/jack_dodd) _friendship_ Jack Dodd is a friend of the Hardys who becomes involved in the mystery, often seeking their help. ### [Jed](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/jed) _social_ Jed is a minor acquaintance or local figure who interacts with Frank during the investigation. ### [Mr. Dodd](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/mr_dodd) _social_ Frank interacts with Mr. Dodd as part of the investigation into Jack's situation. ### [Aunt Gertrude](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/aunt_gertrude) _family_ Aunt Gertrude is Frank's caring but often fussy aunt, who worries about his safety. ### [Biff Hooper](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/biff_hooper) _friendship_ Biff Hooper is a friend and ally of Frank, often helping with physical tasks. ### [Dad](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/dad) _family_ Fenton Hardy, Frank's father, is a respected detective who advises and supports his son. ### [Tony Prito](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/tony_prito) _friendship_ Tony Prito is a friend of Frank, often assisting with boat-related aspects of the mystery. ### [Joe Hardy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/joe_hardy) _family_ Frank and Joe are brothers and close partners in detective work, with Frank often taking the lead. ### [Gus Montrose](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/characters/gus_montrose) _rivalry_ Gus Montrose is a suspicious character frequently at odds with Frank, often under scrutiny for criminal activity. ## In the story ### [Stolen Cars](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/chapters/i-stolen-cars) Leads the discussion about the car thefts and the chase after Isaac Fussy's stolen Cadillac. ### [II: Circumstantial Evidence](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/chapters/ii-circumstantial-evidence) Leads the group after the spill, investigates the scene at Dodd's farm. ### [Under Suspicion](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shore_road_mystery_se/chapters/iii-under-suspicion) Shrewdly observes that Jack's honest identification of the fishing rod suggests innocence;
