Chet is the Hardy boys' high school chum from a farm outside Bayport, forever hungry and forever underestimated. When a snooping detective camps in Jack Dodd's apple tree, Chet chains a bulldog to the trunk and walks away whistling, turning a nuisance into a siege. He matters because he proves the Shore Road mystery isn't only cracked by the brilliant—sometimes it's cracked by the bored and the funny.
