# Kadza — The Shaving of Shagpat character guide

> Kadza in The Shaving of Shagpat by George Meredith.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0000-the-thwackings

## Snapshot

Wife of Shagpat who serves the genie Karaz, walking circles around her husband to read the winds and slipping disguised onto rooftops to spy.

## Who they are

Kadza belongs to the enemy camp by marriage and by devotion, the spouse of Shagpat and the instrument of the genie Karaz, who slings her through the air and sets her to test the omens around her husband. Her tension is a divided loyalty of sorts — she adores the miracle of men, yet serves a plot against him — and she accepts scorching and disguise without flinching, answering Noorna with a coded phrase even as her girdle betrays her. She matters because her reconnaissance gives the antagonists their intelligence, and her failures and exposures mark the shifting balance of the early–middle struggle.
