# Genie Karaz — The Shaving of Shagpat character guide > Genie Karaz in The Shaving of Shagpat by George Meredith. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Karaz **First appearance:** 0004-the-genie-karaz ## Snapshot A malevolent genie who sniffs out plots against Shagpat, slings his spies through the air, and burns with thwarted love for Noorna bin Noorka. ## Who they are Karaz is the hidden hand behind Shagpat's protection, a genie who commands Kadza, reads the air for conspiracy, and moves unseen above the roofs of the city. His distinctive flaw is desire: catching sight of Noorna in flight, he nearly drops Kadza from the sky, forgetting everything but her beauty, and must tighten his whole body into knots to recover himself. He matters because he is the counter-force to Shibli's quest — wherever the heroes scheme, his nostril finds the odour of it, and his magic shapes the obstacles of the middle arc. ## Relationships ### [Noorna bin Noorka](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shaving_of_shagpat_se/characters/noorna_bin_noorka) _rivalry_ Genie Karaz is a malevolent spirit who opposes Noorna and her family, often clashing with her magic. ### [Shagpat](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shaving_of_shagpat_se/characters/shagpat) _psychological_ Genie Karaz is bound to serve Shagpat but harbors a malevolent obsession with his power. ### [Shibli Bagarag](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shaving_of_shagpat_se/characters/shibli_bagarag) _rivalry_ Genie Karaz actively hinders Shibli's quest, using tricks and violence to protect Shagpat. ### [Noorna bin Noorka](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shaving_of_shagpat_se/characters/noorna_bin_noorka) _rivalry_ Genie Karaz is a malevolent spirit who opposes Noorna and her family, often clashing with her magic. ### [Shagpat](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shaving_of_shagpat_se/characters/shagpat) _psychological_ Genie Karaz is bound to serve Shagpat but harbors a malevolent obsession with his power. ### [Shibli Bagarag](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shaving_of_shagpat_se/characters/shibli_bagarag) _rivalry_ Genie Karaz actively hinders Shibli's quest, using tricks and violence to protect Shagpat. ### [Shibli Bagarag](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shaving_of_shagpat_se/characters/shibli_bagarag) _rivalry_ Genie Karaz actively hinders Shibli's quest, using tricks and violence to protect Shagpat. ### [Shagpat](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shaving_of_shagpat_se/characters/shagpat) _psychological_ Genie Karaz is bound to serve Shagpat but harbors a malevolent obsession with his power. ## In the story ### [The Genie Karaz](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shaving_of_shagpat_se/chapters/the-genie-karaz) Summoned by Noorna, he is forced into the shape of an ass despite his anger and resistance. ### [The Well of Paravid](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shaving_of_shagpat_se/chapters/the-well-of-paravid) Travels in the form of an ass, carrying the pair; his tail is dangerous, and Noorna must keep him enchanted to prevent escape. ### [The Horse Garraveen](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shaving_of_shagpat_se/chapters/the-horse-garraveen) Summoned by Noorna, wrestles Shibli from Garraveen and rides the horse away, freeing himself from Noorna's control. ### [The Talking Hawk](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shaving_of_shagpat_se/chapters/the-talking-hawk) Disguised as a ship captain, he attempts to capture Shibli but is thwarted by the hawk. ### [The Lily of the Enchanted Sea](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_shaving_of_shagpat_se/chapters/the-lily-of-the-enchanted-sea) Karaz is summoned by the hawk and confronts Goorelka and Shibli.
