Chapter 1
I: On Early Rising
A group of young houseguests, including Jimmy Thesiger, Bill Eversleigh, Ronny Devereux, and several young women, conspire to play a prank on the perpetually late-sleeping Gerald Wade. They decide to buy multiple alarm clocks in Market Basing to ensure he wakes up early. Lady Coote is enlisted to detain Wade at breakfast while the others shop. Rupert Bateman suggests the alarm clock idea, and the group purchases six clocks, with extras for Bateman and Lady Coote.
Chapter 2
Concerning Alarm Clocks
After dinner, the house party at Wyvern Abbey plays bridge while the younger guests conspire to play a prank on Gerald Wade by hiding eight alarm clocks in his bedroom to wake him early. They debate the timing and placement of the clocks, eventually enlisting Rupert Bateman to quietly place them after Wade falls asleep. The chapter ends with the clocks successfully hidden and ticking loudly as Wade sleeps.
Chapter 3
III: The Joke That Failed
Jimmy Thesiger and Ronny Devereux drive to Deane Priory to inform Loraine Wade of her half-brother Gerald's death. Loraine reacts with shock but composure, declining their offer to accompany them back to Chimneys. Upon returning, Jimmy notices that one of Gerald's eight alarm clocks is missing, and Ronny's behavior grows increasingly odd. Dr. Cartwright confirms Gerald died from an overdose of chloral, ruling out foul play for now, but Ronny's secretive manner and the missing clock hint at deeper mysteries.
Chapter 4
A Letter
Bundle Brent, at home with her father Lord Caterham, discusses the recent death of Gerald Wade at their estate. Lord Caterham complains about the inconvenience and the inquest, while Bundle learns about the mysterious alarm clocks found in Wade's room. Later, while writing a letter to Bill Eversleigh, Bundle discovers a crumpled, unfinished letter from Gerry Wade to Loraine Wade, dated the evening of his death. In it, Wade mentions feeling fit but sleepy, and warns Loraine to forget about a 'Seven Dials business.' This contradicts the official narrative of an accidental overdose, sparking Bundle's suspicion.
Chapter 5
V: The Man in the Road
Bundle, driving recklessly to London, nearly hits a man who staggers into the road. Believing she has killed him, she takes him to a doctor, only to learn the man was shot, not struck by her car. The dying man's last words are 'Seven Dials... tell Jimmy Thesiger.'
