# Marquis de Beaugreval — The Secret Tomb character guide

> Marquis de Beaugreval in The Secret Tomb by Maurice Leblanc.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** de Beaugreval, Beaugreval

**First appearance:** 0010-xi-the-will-of-the-marquis-de-beaugreval

## Snapshot

A long-dead marquis whose sealed instructions read like prophecy, counting out the very steps his visitors climb toward his hidden chamber.

## Who they are

The Marquis de Beaugreval left behind a statement so precise that Errington treats him as a host expecting guests, and the stones, the staircase, and the step count oblige with unnerving exactness. His letter turns a treasure hunt into something closer to a séance, with Maître Delarue singing to keep his nerve as the numbers climb. When the alcove finally yields its occupant, the portrait above the bed matches the man before them, and the Marquis's authority over the living only deepens.
