Frank Hardy

Frank is the methodical half of Bayport's teenage detective duo, the son of famous private investigator Fenton Hardy and already a veteran of two solved cases. He is the one who notices the odd fumble when Uncle Dock offers reward money, and who insists on working their suspicions alone until they have real evidence rather than running to their father. His patience and instinct for small details drive the brothers deeper into the mill mystery.

Joe shares his father's deductive gift but not his caution, and he feels the sting of being fooled by a stranger far more keenly than Frank does. He is the one who dives into the river to save Lester and who bristles when Uncle Dock orders them off the bank. Uncle Dock poses as a breakfast-food manufacturer but rules the mill with threats, striking Lester and warning the Hardy boys to stay off the riverbank. His offer of reward money is meant to be gracious, yet the way Kurt snatches the bills from his hand and nervously hands them back plants Frank's first real suspicion. Dock's temper and carelessness make him the crack in the gang's otherwise careful facade.

Fenton Hardy

Fenton Hardy has been retained by Federal authorities to break up a counterfeiting ring that has flooded the region with ten thousand dollars in bad bills. His case gives the boys' private investigation a larger stakes and a looming question of when to tell him what they have found.
