# Joe Hardy — The Secret of the Caves character guide > Joe Hardy in The Secret of the Caves by Franklin W. Dixon. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Joe, Hardy **First appearance:** 0000-i-overboard ## Snapshot Frank's younger brother, quick to shout a warning and quicker to act, who refuses to believe his brother is dead even when every echo comes back empty. ## Who they are Joe is the Hardy who hears footsteps in the night and wakes the camp, the one who scrambles up a cliff path after a madman lobbing boulders. Where Frank calculates, Joe charges — and when Frank vanishes into a pit, it is Joe who steadies his voice and insists they keep searching long after hope thins. His loyalty to his brother is the engine of the rescue, and his recklessness keeps the pursuit dangerous. ## Relationships ### [Frank Hardy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_secret_of_the_caves_se/characters/frank_hardy) _family_ Frank and Joe are brothers and the main detective duo, working closely together on mysteries. ### [Captain Royal](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_secret_of_the_caves_se/characters/captain_royal) _professional_ Captain Royal works with Joe Hardy as a helpful ally during their seafaring adventures. ### [Chet Morton](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_secret_of_the_caves_se/characters/chet_morton) _friendship_ Chet Morton is Joe's good friend and a loyal member of the Hardy boys' circle. ### [Miss Evangeline Todd](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_secret_of_the_caves_se/characters/miss_evangeline_todd) _social_ Joe Hardy interacts with Miss Evangeline Todd as part of the investigation into the caves. ### [Biff Hooper](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_secret_of_the_caves_se/characters/biff_hooper) _friendship_ Biff Hooper is a friend of Joe Hardy, part of the group that assists in solving mysteries. ### [Todham Todd](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_secret_of_the_caves_se/characters/todham_todd) _social_ Todham Todd is a relative of Miss Evangeline Todd and interacts with Joe during the investigation. ### [Fenton Hardy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_secret_of_the_caves_se/characters/fenton_hardy) _family_ Fenton Hardy is Joe's father, a famous detective who supports his sons' sleuthing. ### [Tony Prito](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_secret_of_the_caves_se/characters/tony_prito) _friendship_ Tony Prito is a friend of Joe Hardy and part of the group that helps with investigations. ### [Iola Morton](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_secret_of_the_caves_se/characters/iola_morton) _romantic_ Iola Morton is Chet's sister and has a romantic interest in Joe Hardy. ### [Frank Hardy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_secret_of_the_caves_se/characters/frank_hardy) _family_ Frank and Joe are brothers and the main detective duo, working closely together on mysteries. ### [Frank Hardy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_secret_of_the_caves_se/characters/frank_hardy) _family_ Frank and Joe are brothers and the main detective duo, working closely together on mysteries. ### [Captain Royal](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_secret_of_the_caves_se/characters/captain_royal) _professional_ Captain Royal works with Joe Hardy as a helpful ally during their seafaring adventures. ## In the story ### [I: Overboard](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_secret_of_the_caves_se/chapters/i-overboard) Frank's younger brother, fair and curly-headed, about fifteen.
