> Stéphane Maroux in The Secret of Sarek by Maurice Leblanc.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Stéphane, Maroux, dear Stéphane

**First appearance:** 0001-the-secret-of-sarek

## Snapshot

François's grown friend on Sarek, Stéphane Maroux is the steady presence the boy's world leans on, admired and imitated in flat cap and flannel.

## Who they are

Maroux is the companion François looks up to, the 'big friend' whose knitted cap the boy copies in red, and one of the few young men still on an island emptied of its working-age men by the war. He belongs to the shrinking circle of islanders who know François's daily habits and the small rituals of his life. His closeness to the boy places him near the center of whatever threatens Sarek's remaining inhabitants.
