> Madame Honorine in The Secret of Sarek by Maurice Leblanc.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** M'ame Honorine, Honorine, Mother Honorine, Mother

**First appearance:** 0001-the-secret-of-sarek

## Snapshot

Véronique's old nurse pilots her through the reefs of Sarek and blows a shell-trumpet to summon the boy waiting on the cliffs.

## Who they are

Honorine is the practical heart of the island's small surviving community, ferrying Véronique past the rocks and coaching her to fold her veil so François will not recognize his mother from photographs. She insists that Véronique's martyrdom is over and that happiness is still possible, a stubborn cheerfulness that pushes back against her mistress's remorse. Her knowledge of Sarek's tides, paths, and people makes her the guide through which the island's dangers first become visible.
