## Who they are

Captain Patrice Belval enters the story as a man of action in a world of secrets, his naval training and sense of duty placing him in direct contrast to Vorski's chaotic cruelty. He becomes involved in the search for Véronique and the unraveling of the island's mysteries, his competence a counterweight to the superstition and fear that grip others. His presence in the early-middle arc gives the narrative a steady hand, even as the island's secrets prove resistant to any straightforward rescue.
