Mr. Carver is the kind of man whose presence raises more questions than it answers, a figure whose involvement in a crime is never quite what it seems. He operates in the shadows of the story, his intentions unclear even to those closest to him. Father Brown's interest in Carver is not in what he has done but in what he is — and the distinction proves decisive.
