Concepts
Ideas that structure The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Anarchism and Terrorism
The book explores the motivations, futility, and moral squalor of anarchist activities, centered on a plot to blow up the Greenwich Observatory, revealing the criminal stupidity and philosophical pretenses behind political violence.
Betrayal and Deception
Characters operate in a world of spies, secret agents, and double-crossing, where Verloc betrays his brother-in-law Stevie to his death, and the police and foreign embassies manipulate informants for their own ends.
Family and Loyalty
The Verloc family dynamic—Winnie's devotion to her brother Stevie, her mother's sacrifices, and Verloc's exploitation of Stevie—highlights how familial bonds are twisted by selfishness and tragedy.
Moral Squalor and Corruption
The novel depicts a sordid London underworld of shady shops, poverty, and moral decay, where characters like Verloc and the Professor embody a profound lack of ethical restraint.
Futility of Violence
The bombing attempt results in Stevie's accidental death and achieves nothing, underscoring the pointlessness of violent acts and the tragic consequences for innocent victims.
Isolation and Alienation
Characters like Winnie after Stevie's death and the Professor feel profoundly alone, cut off from society and unable to find connection or meaning in a hostile world.
Class and Social Inequality
The contrast between the wealthy elite (e.g., Sir Ethelred, the great lady) and the impoverished characters (e.g., Mrs. Neale, Stevie) highlights systemic injustice and the exploitation of the weak by the strong.
Psychology of Crime
The novel delves into the minds of criminals and anarchists, examining guilt, fear, and rationalization—as seen in Verloc's shock after Stevie's death and Winnie's terror of the gallows.
