Chapter 2
The Secret Adversary
Tommy and Tuppence, two young friends after the war, meet in London and decide to form a partnership as adventurers, seeking employment and excitement. They encounter Mr. Whittington, who offers Tuppence a mysterious job, and later meet Julius Hersheimmer, an American searching for his missing cousin Jane Finn. The chapter sets up the central mystery and the pair's decision to become 'adventurers.'
Chapter 3
Prologue
On May 7, 1915, as the Lusitania sinks after being torpedoed, a young American girl is approached by a mysterious man who entrusts her with an oilskin packet containing vitally important papers. He instructs her to watch the personal column of the Times for a message beginning 'Shipmate' and, if he does not survive, to deliver the packet to the American Ambassador. The girl accepts the mission and takes her place in a lifeboat.
Chapter 4
The Young Adventurers, Ltd.
Tommy and Tuppence reunite in London after the war, both broke and jobless. Over tea, they discuss their financial struggles and decide to form a partnership called 'The Young Adventurers, Ltd.' to offer their services for hire, placing an advertisement in the Times.
Chapter 5
II: Mr. Whittington's Offer
Tuppence meets Mr. Whittington, who offers her a mysterious job. She adopts the alias 'Jane Finn,' which provokes an angry reaction from Whittington, revealing his involvement in something secret. Tuppence cleverly plays along, extracting fifty pounds as an advance. She later sends a telegram to Tommy and returns in a taxi, flaunting her newfound wealth.
