# Semyon Medvedenko — The Seagull character guide

> Semyon Medvedenko in The Seagull by Anton Chekhov.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Medvedenko, Semyon

**First appearance:** 0001-the-seagull

## Snapshot

A schoolmaster on twenty-three roubles a month who walks eight miles daily to be told, gently and repeatedly, that his love is not returned.

## Who they are

Medvedenko supports a mother, two sisters, and a brother on a salary that barely stretches to tea and tobacco, and he cannot stop itemising it aloud. He adores Masha, who mourns her life in black and takes snuff while telling him his devotion moves her but changes nothing. His dogged, unglamorous persistence sets the play's baseline of ordinary, unrequited want against which every grander passion is measured.
