## Snapshot

A retired civil councillor who wanted to be a writer, a husband, a man of the city, and ended up in a bath-chair in the country.

## Who they are

Sorin presides over the estate where the play unfolds, a gentle, ailing old man who jokes about the story he might have written, 'The Man Who Wished.' He is fond of Treplev and anxious about him, urging Arkadina to take her son seriously, and he confesses to Dorn that he has served twenty-eight years and never really lived. His regret and his affection give the household its softest, saddest center.
