**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Polina

**First appearance:** 0001-the-seagull

## Snapshot

Shamraev's wife, who makes beds, smooths hair, and carries a long-smouldering feeling for the doctor that everyone but her husband seems to notice.

## Who they are

Polina moves through the house doing small services — sheets, pillows, a hand passed over Kostya's hair — while quietly aching for Dorn and for her daughter's hopeless love. She begs Treplev to be kinder to Masha, then absorbs Masha's sharp reply that hopeless love belongs only in novels. Her fussing tenderness and unspoken disappointment make her the play's quiet engine of domestic sorrow.
