# Konstantin Treplev — The Seagull character guide

> Konstantin Treplev in The Seagull by Anton Chekhov.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Treplev, Konstantin, Kostya

**First appearance:** 0001-the-seagull

## Snapshot

A young playwright who stages a play by the lake at moonrise, then watches his mother and his muse slip toward the same famous man.

## Who they are

Treplev writes experimental theatre on his uncle's estate, desperate for his mother's approval and for Nina's love, and contemptuous of the conventional stage Arkadina represents. He tears the bandage from his head and rails at her for stifling everything that isn't hers, then collapses weeping into her arms when she calls him a beggar. His wounded ambition and his rivalry with Trigorin make him the play's rawest nerve.
