# Ilya Shamraev — The Seagull character guide

> Ilya Shamraev in The Seagull by Anton Chekhov.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Shamraev

**First appearance:** 0001-the-seagull

## Snapshot

The estate manager who reveres Madame Arkadin's talent to her face and refuses her a single horse to her back, then resigns on the spot.

## Who they are

Shamraev runs Sorin's farm on rye-carting days and collars that cannot be found, greeting the returning actress with compliments about her youth and sprightliness. When she demands transport to the station, he explodes that she does not understand farming and storms off to resign. His petty, practical obstinacy turns a request for horses into the play's first open rupture between art and the people who feed it.
