Concepts
Ideas that structure The Sea-Wolf by Jack London — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Primitive vs. Civilized
The book contrasts the brutal, primal nature of Wolf Larsen with the refined, intellectual world of Humphrey Van Weyden, exploring the tension between raw instinct and civilized morality.
Individualism and Power
Wolf Larsen embodies extreme individualism, using his physical and mental strength to dominate others, while the narrative questions the ethics and loneliness of such a philosophy.
Survival and Adaptation
Humphrey is forced to adapt from a sheltered intellectual to a capable seaman, highlighting the theme of survival through physical and psychological transformation in a harsh environment.
Morality and Amorality
Wolf Larsen rejects conventional morals, viewing life as valueless and acting without conscience, which challenges Humphrey's ethical beliefs and forces a reexamination of right and wrong.
Love and Redemption
The romance between Humphrey and Maud Brewster provides a counterpoint to the brutality of the ship, offering hope, tenderness, and a sense of purpose that redeems Humphrey's ordeal.
Class and Hierarchy
The rigid social structure aboard the Ghost—from captain to hunters to common sailors—mirrors class divisions, with characters like the cook and cabin boy illustrating power dynamics and servility.
Nature and the Sublime
The sea and storms are depicted as overwhelming, indifferent forces that test human endurance, while also inspiring awe and revealing the characters' inner strengths and fears.
Madness and Genius
Wolf Larsen is portrayed as both a genius and a madman, with his erratic moods, philosophical insights, and violent rages blurring the line between brilliance and insanity.
