He is her confidant and accomplice, listening as she confesses her design to destroy Charles and Maria's attachment out of her own thwarted passion. His readiness to serve any master who pays makes him a walking reminder that in this world reputation is a commodity, and that the scandalmongers' weapons can always be bought back.
