# How does The Room in the Dragon Volant develop the theme of Isolation and Vulnerability?

> The Room in the Dragon Volant by J. Sheridan Le Fanu

## Answer

The Room in the Dragon Volant by J. Sheridan Le Fanu develops Isolation and Vulnerability across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The protagonist's status as a foreigner traveling alone in post-Napoleonic France, combined with the isolated setting of the Dragon Volant and the Château de la Carque, heightens his susceptibility to the plot against him.

The narrator's solitary room and the locked door heighten his sense of isolation and foreshadow danger.

The narrator's cataleptic state renders him utterly helpless and isolated, unable to defend himself as a stranger rifles through his possessions.

The narrator's frantic search for lodging and his solitary arrival at the secluded Dragon Volant inn highlight his vulnerability away from familiar surroundings.
