# The Narrator — The Room in the Dragon Volant character guide > The Narrator in The Room in the Dragon Volant by J. Sheridan Le Fanu. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Unknown, myself, me, mine, I., yours **First appearance:** 0001-the-room-in-the-dragon-volant ## Snapshot An unnamed English gentleman whose gallantry at a roadside inn earns him an invitation into a world of masked strangers and impossible secrets. ## Who they are He arrives at the Dragon Volant flushed with the thrill of a rescue at the Belle Étoile, already half in love with a woman he barely knows. His servant St. Clair feeds him tales of guests who vanished bodily from the inn, and the host answers his questions about the Count with evasions that only sharpen his appetite. He is brave, credulous, and eager to be tested — precisely the temperament that makes an intrigue like this one so dangerous. ## In the story ### [The Room in the Dragon Volant](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_room_in_the_dragon_volant_se/chapters/the-room-in-the-dragon-volant) Arrives at the Dragon Volant and takes the unusual room, reflecting on the day's events. ### [I: On the Road](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_room_in_the_dragon_volant_se/chapters/i-on-the-road) A 23-year-old Englishman traveling to Paris after inheriting a fortune; he is curious, romantic, and audacious. ### [II: The Innyard of the Belle Étoile](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_room_in_the_dragon_volant_se/chapters/ii-the-innyard-of-the-belle-toile) Falls in love at first sight with the Countess; attempts to investigate the mysterious couple; sends his servant St. Clair to gather information. ### [III: Death and Love Together Mated](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_room_in_the_dragon_volant_se/chapters/iii-death-and-love-together-mated) Restless and infatuated, he dresses carefully and eavesdrops on the Count and Countess, romanticizing the Countess's plight. ### [IV: Monsieur Droqville](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_room_in_the_dragon_volant_se/chapters/iv-monsieur-droqville) Mistaken for Mr. Stanhope Beckett, he accidentally reads a confidential letter but earns the Marquis's trust.
