## Snapshot

A hard-eyed woman who admits to blackmailing Morgan, then stuns the Queens by announcing she knows who killed Monte Field.

## Who they are

Mrs. Russo arrives as a blackmailer caught in the Inspector's bluff, snarling that Morgan squealed and bargaining for leniency with the confidence of someone holding a trump card. When she declares she knows the killer, Ellery's book drops to the floor and the room goes electric. She matters because she detonates the case's central question — whether her knowledge is genuine or a shakedown — and her composure unsettles even the Queens.
