# Shaggy Man — The Road to Oz character guide > Shaggy Man in The Road to Oz by L. Frank Baum. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** The Shaggy Man **First appearance:** 0008-vii-the-shaggy-man-s-transformation ## Snapshot A wandering, shabbily dressed man who despises money, refuses new clothes for fear of losing himself, and carries a Love Magnet he has not yet revealed. ## Who they are The Shaggy Man travels with Dorothy toward the Emerald City, cheerfully penniless and indifferent to dress, insisting he would rather stay shaggy than become a stranger to himself. He is earnest about proving himself honest and worthy so Ozma might let him live in Oz forever, and the Tin Woodman already loves him without knowing why — the Love Magnet he carries quietly explains it. His easy warmth and refusal of vanity anchor the group's tone as they move from one strange kingdom to the next. ## Relationships ### [Dorothy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/characters/dorothy) _friendship_ Dorothy and the Shaggy Man are close traveling companions, with Dorothy showing kindness and guiding him on his journey to Oz. ### [Button-Bright](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/characters/button_bright) _friendship_ Button-Bright and the Shaggy Man are travel companions, with the Shaggy Man looking after the boy during their journey. ### [Toto](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/characters/toto) _friendship_ The Shaggy Man is friendly with Toto, often interacting with the little dog during their travels. ### [King Dox](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/characters/king_dox) _social_ King Dox and the Shaggy Man interact as ruler and visitor, with the Shaggy Man being a guest in Foxville. ### [Scoodlers](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/characters/scoodlers) _rivalry_ The Scoodlers are hostile creatures who attack the Shaggy Man and his companions, creating conflict. ### [Johnny Dooit](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/characters/johnny_dooit) _friendship_ Johnny Dooit helps the Shaggy Man and his friends by quickly building needed structures, showing cooperative goodwill. ### [Tin Woodman](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/characters/tin_woodman) _friendship_ The Shaggy Man and the Tin Woodman become friendly acquaintances, with the Tin Woodman offering hospitality. ### [Dorothy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/characters/dorothy) _friendship_ Dorothy and the Shaggy Man are close traveling companions, with Dorothy showing kindness and guiding him on his journey to Oz. ### [Dorothy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/characters/dorothy) _friendship_ Dorothy and the Shaggy Man are close traveling companions, with Dorothy showing kindness and guiding him on his journey to Oz. ### [Button-Bright](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/characters/button_bright) _friendship_ Button-Bright and the Shaggy Man are travel companions, with the Shaggy Man looking after the boy during their journey. ### [Johnny Dooit](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/characters/johnny_dooit) _friendship_ Johnny Dooit helps the Shaggy Man and his friends by quickly building needed structures, showing cooperative goodwill. ### [King Dox](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/characters/king_dox) _social_ King Dox and the Shaggy Man interact as ruler and visitor, with the Shaggy Man being a guest in Foxville. ## In the story ### [To My Readers](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/chapters/to-my-readers) Introduced as a new character the author is fond of. ### [The Road to Oz](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/chapters/the-road-to-oz) A traveler who joins Dorothy on the road. ### [The Way to Butterfield](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/chapters/i-the-way-to-butterfield) The Shaggy Man tricks Dorothy into getting lost and shows her his Love Magnet. ### [Dorothy Meets Button-Bright](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_road_to_oz_se/chapters/ii-dorothy-meets-button-bright) Travels with Dorothy and suggests Button-Bright come along;
