Chapter 1
To My Readers
L. Frank Baum addresses his young readers, explaining that this new Oz book is written in response to their many requests for more stories about Dorothy and Oz. He introduces the new characters—the Shaggy Man, Polychrome, and Button-Bright—and hints at remarkable news from Oz that will be saved for a future book.
Chapter 2
The Road to Oz
Dorothy meets the Shaggy Man and Button-Bright on the road to Oz, and they encounter various strange beings and challenges, including the Scoodlers and the Truth Pond, before finally arriving at the Emerald City for Ozma's birthday celebration.
Chapter 3
The Way to Butterfield
Dorothy meets the Shaggy Man and agrees to show him the road to Butterfield, but he tricks her into getting lost at a crossroads with many roads. They become lost together, and the Shaggy Man reveals his Love Magnet, which makes everyone love him.
Chapter 4
Dorothy Meets Button-Bright
Dorothy and the Shaggy Man continue along a winding road and encounter a lost little boy dressed in sailor clothes who calls himself Button-Bright. Despite Dorothy's persistent questions, Button-Bright can only answer 'don't know' to everything. The Shaggy Man suggests he join them, and Toto investigates the hole Button-Bright is digging. They decide to continue on their journey together, uncertain of their destination.
Chapter 5
A Queer Village
Dorothy, the Shaggy Man, Button-Bright, and Toto encounter a company of fox soldiers who escort them to the city of Foxville. They meet King Dox, who recognizes Dorothy as a friend of Princess Ozma and mentions Ozma's upcoming birthday celebration. The group learns they have entered another fairy adventure.
