Chapter 2
The Letter
Carruthers, a young Foreign Office official, languishes in London during September, feeling neglected and bored after his social plans collapse. He receives a letter from an old acquaintance, Davies, inviting him to join a yachting and duck-shooting trip in Flensburg, Germany. Despite initial reluctance and skepticism about the venture, Carruthers begins to consider the offer as a potential escape from his dreary routine.
Chapter 3
The Dulcibella
Carruthers arrives in Flensburg to meet Davies and is shocked to discover that the yacht Dulcibella is a small, cramped vessel with no paid crew. After a difficult journey loading supplies and rowing out to the anchorage, Carruthers explores the tiny cabin and begins to reconcile himself to the adventure ahead, despite his initial disappointment.
Chapter 4
III: Davies
Carruthers begins to understand Davies' character and seamanship as they sail through the Schleswig fjords. Despite a series of mishaps—grounding, a botched jibe, and a chaotic lunch preparation—Carruthers gains a new appreciation for Davies' sincerity, skill, and unpretentious nature. The chapter deepens their bond and sets the stage for their shared adventure.
Chapter 5
IV: Retrospect
Davies reluctantly recounts his solo voyage from the Frisian Islands to the Baltic, glossing over dangers and cutting his story short. Carruthers presses for details but Davies evades, revealing only a bare itinerary. The chapter ends with them anchored near Sonderburg, Davies deflecting further questions about his cruise.
