> Jean Caillaud in The Revolution in Tanner’s Lane by Mark Rutherford.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Jean, Caillaud

**First appearance:** 0006-v-the-horizon-widens

## Snapshot

A French émigré in London whose fierce republican convictions and consuming love for his outspoken daughter Pauline make him quietly formidable in any political argument.

## Who they are

Jean Caillaud moves through the radical circles of Tanner's Lane as a Frenchman who has seen revolution up close and cannot forget it. His love for Pauline is a hungry, self-effacing fire — he falls silent when she speaks, content to let her brilliance carry the room. That very devotion, set against his unyielding hatred of kings and his grief over Napoleon's exile, makes him a still center of political and emotional tension in the novel's early chapters.
