# Iahveh — The Revolt of the Angels character guide

> Iahveh in The Revolt of the Angels by Anatole France.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** old Iahveh, the ancient Iahveh

**First appearance:** 0000-i

## Snapshot

The ancient, jealous God of the angels' heaven, whose claim to have created the universe Nectaire has learned to despise as imposture.

## Who they are

From his mountain, Iahveh watched Lucifer's brilliance with envy and demanded a worship rooted in fear rather than love. Nectaire, once the Domination Alaciel, studied nature until he concluded that the world exists of itself and not by Iahveh's caprice, and came to hate the deity for opposing liberty, curiosity, and doubt. As the celestial antagonist whose thunderbolts and hosts the rebels must reckon with, he looms over the whole conspiracy without ever needing to step onstage.
