Ideas that structure The Religion of Nature Delineated by William Wollaston — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Moral Good and Evil
The book establishes that the foundation of religion lies in the distinction between good, evil, and indifferent acts, defining moral good as conformity to truth and moral evil as a departure from it, rooted in the actions of intelligent and free agents.
Truth and Reason
A central theme is that truth is the ultimate standard for morality, discovered through reason and sense, and that acting contrary to truth—whether by word or deed—constitutes moral wrong, with reason serving as the supreme faculty for guiding human conduct.
Natural Religion and the Deity
The work explores natural religion as a system of duties and truths discoverable by reason alone, arguing for the existence of a perfect, independent Deity as the first cause and foundation of moral order, without reliance on revealed religion.
Society and Government
The book argues that society is natural to man for mutual welfare and protection, requiring laws, government, and magistrates to ensure the common good, with laws needing to be consistent with natural justice and truth.
Property and Individual Rights
It emphasizes that every individual has a natural property in their life, limbs, labor, and its products, and that violating this property—such as by theft or oppression—is a denial of truth and a moral evil, with men being equal in a state of nature.
Marriage and Family
Marriage is presented as a solemn contract aimed at the propagation of mankind and the joint happiness of the couple, with duties of fidelity, mutual assistance, and parental care for children, all grounded in truth and natural law.
Happiness and Pleasure
The text discusses happiness as the end of society and individual action, analyzing pleasure and pain in terms of their true quantities and proportions, and advocating for rational self-governance to achieve genuine well-being.
Free Will and Moral Responsibility
The book underscores the importance of free will, asserting that moral good and evil depend on human choice and that individuals are responsible for their actions, with the power to incline themselves toward good or evil.
