**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Aristotle

**First appearance:** 0004-i-of-moral-good-and-evil

## Snapshot

Greek philosopher of natural law whose shadow falls across the book's effort to align reason, nature, and virtue into one law.

## Who they are

He is present less as a quoted name than as a framework: the idea that a creature endowed with reason has a law proper to its nature, and that acting according to reason and acting according to truth are the same. The tension is whether nature and wisdom can ever dictate different things — Juvenal's line insists they cannot. He matters because the book's whole architecture of a rational religion rests on this Aristotelian inheritance.
