Family Loyalty and Conflict

The Hornby family is torn apart by the theft, with tensions between the uncle's financial troubles, the cousins' rivalry, and the aunt's misguided interference, testing bonds of blood and trust.

Mrs. Hornby's fierce loyalty to Reuben contrasts with the strain in Juliet and Reuben's relationship, as hinted by Juliet's confession of a past barrier.

John Hornby's testimony reveals tension as he is forced to testify against his nephew, and Mrs. Hornby's Thumbograph is used as evidence despite her distress.
