**Also known as:** Birch, Inspector

**First appearance:** 0009-viii-do-you-follow-me-watson

## Snapshot

The local police inspector who presides over the inquest with a quiet, unshowy competence that Antony watches with wary professional interest.

## Who they are

Inspector Birch leads the official investigation into Robert Ablett's death, questioning witnesses at the coroner's inquest and sifting the unreliable sightings of the vanished Mark. He is a sound, close-mouthed man who does not tip his theories, which makes him both a useful foil and a quiet threat to Antony's private inquiry. His handling of the case shapes how much the amateur detectives can learn from the official record.
