Elsie is a servant whose testimony the police take seriously even as Cayley dismisses it as the imaginings of 'girls of that class.' What she heard through the office door—voices, and Mark's distinctive tones—quietly contradicts the tidy version of events the household prefers. Her evidence becomes a small but stubborn thread that Antony refuses to let go, and it keeps the possibility of Mark's guilt alive against the general assumption of his innocence.
