## Who they are

Audrey Stevens works in the housekeeper's room under her aunt Mrs. Stevens, absorbed in small domestic pleasures and the gossip of a brother no one has seen in fifteen years. Her cheerful, unguarded talk with her aunt opens the novel and plants the first unease about Mark Ablett's Australian visitor. She matters because her ordinary vantage point, close to the household but outside its secrets, gives the reader the first thread of the mystery.
