Concepts
Ideas that structure The Rasp by Philip MacDonald — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Justice and Injustice
The book explores the tension between circumstantial evidence and true guilt, as the protagonist Anthony Gethryn works to prove the innocence of Archibald Deacon, who is wrongly accused of murder based on fingerprints and motive.
Appearance vs. Reality
Characters and clues repeatedly mislead; the seemingly obvious suspect (Deacon) is innocent, while the true murderer is hidden among the household, and the wood-rasp's mark on the table reveals a crucial discrepancy between how the crime appears and what actually happened.
Class and Social Hierarchy
The narrative examines the rigid British class structure through the household at Abbotshall, with servants, the gentry, and a Cabinet Minister, and how suspicion falls differently based on social standing.
The Role of the Press
The book highlights the power and sensationalism of journalism, as seen through Spencer Hastings' newspaper *The Owl*, which profits from the murder and shapes public opinion, while also aiding the investigation.
Secrecy and Blackmail
Secrets drive the plot, including the dead minister's hidden mistress (Vanda), stolen love letters, and the sister Laura Hoode's desperate attempts to conceal her brother's private life from the public.
The Detective as Outsider
Anthony Gethryn, a polymath and war hero, operates outside official police methods, using intuition, observation, and unconventional reasoning to solve the crime, often clashing with conventional authorities like Superintendent Boyd.
Love and Romantic Tension
A subplot involves Anthony's growing attraction to Lucia Lemesurier, which complicates his focus on the case and adds emotional depth, contrasting with the cold logic of detection.
The Fallibility of Evidence
The book critiques over-reliance on forensic evidence like fingerprints, as Anthony argues they can be misleading, and demonstrates how physical clues (e.g., the mark on the table) require careful interpretation.
