> Don Hilario in The Purple Land by W. H. Hudson.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Hilario, dog Hilario, the scoundrel Hilario

**First appearance:** 0005-iv-vagabonds-rest

## Snapshot

A ruthless landowner whose cruelty and cunning make him the shadow Richard must reckon with across the plains of the Banda Orientál.

## Who they are

Don Hilario belongs to the class of local strongmen whose power the revolution both threatens and feeds, and his reputation travels ahead of him in the mouths of the people Richard meets. He is the kind of antagonist who works through property, patronage, and quiet violence rather than open battle, which makes him far more dangerous to a wandering Englishman than any army. His presence sharpens the book's moral landscape, forcing Richard to see that the Purple Land's beauty and hospitality have a brutal underside.
