# Dolores Zelaya — The Purple Land character guide

> Dolores Zelaya in The Purple Land by W. H. Hudson.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Dolores

**First appearance:** 0004-iii-materials-for-a-pastoral

## Snapshot

The beautiful girl Richard persuades to flee home and parents on a promise of undying affection, then abandons in his heart for another.

## Who they are

Dolores is the daughter of the Casa Blanca, and Richard's elopement with her sets a private betrayal running beneath the public turmoil of the Santa Coloma revolt. Her cold reception of him when he returns with the General makes plain how thoroughly he has wounded her, and his own grief over causing that sorrow competes with the inconvenient new passion that has displaced her. She matters because she is the measure of Richard's unreliability in love, the human cost of his youthful self-confidence, and a quiet accusation that follows him through the campaign.
