## Explanation

The book presents a classic 'last man' scenario, where the sole survivor of a global apocalypse confronts existential questions about purpose, legacy, and the meaning of a world without society.

Jeffson is left as the sole survivor after the purple cloud exterminates humanity.

The Last Man is one of the patterns The Purple Cloud by M. P. Shiel returns to. The chapter notes above are from this edition’s companions — open those chapters to see how the book stages the idea rather than treating the theme as a slogan.
