**First appearance:** 0009-iv-the-religious-foundations-of-worldly-asceticism

## Snapshot

The kindly Puritan pastor whose sermons on steady, specialized labor read almost like Adam Smith with a conscience.

## Who they are

Baxter is the practical voice of ascetic Protestantism, arguing that a settled calling produces order, skill, and the common good, while a man without one drifts into idleness and confusion. His utilitarianism is unmistakable — specialization improves production — yet he frames it as a proof of grace, pursued with care and method. Weber finds in him the moment Puritan ethics quietly blesses the division of labor.
