# What Madness and Rationality means in The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner

> The editor's rational attempts to explain the supernatural events contrast with Robert's fanatical, possibly insane perspective, leaving the reader uncertain whether the events are supernatural, psychological, or a mix of both.

## Explanation

The editor's rational attempts to explain the supernatural events contrast with Robert's fanatical, possibly insane perspective, leaving the reader uncertain whether the events are supernatural, psychological, or a mix of both.

The editor struggles to reconcile the supernatural events with reason, ultimately attributing the narrative to madness or religious mania.

Madness and Rationality is one of the patterns The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner by James Hogg returns to. The chapter notes above are from this edition’s companions — open those chapters to see how the book stages the idea rather than treating the theme as a slogan.
