# Rudolf Rassendyll — The Prisoner of Zenda character guide > Rudolf Rassendyll in The Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Rudolf, Rassendyll, old Rudolf, cousin Rudolf, Mr. Rassendyll **First appearance:** 0000-i-the-rassendylls-with-a-word-on-the-elphbergs ## Snapshot A charming, idle English gentleman with the Elphberg nose and hair, who seizes a chance to impersonate Ruritania's king and finds himself living a dangerous, intoxicating lie. ## Who they are Rudolf Rassendyll is a well-born idler whose red hair and distinctive nose betray a scandalous ancestral link to Ruritania's royal Elphbergs. When a casual trip brings him face to face with the king he so uncannily resembles, a shave and a borrowed uniform turn him into a monarch. His wit and honor carry him through the role, but his growing love for Princess Flavia makes the impersonation a torment as much as an adventure, and the story's central tension is whether he can play a king without losing himself. ## Relationships ### [Princess Flavia](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_prisoner_of_zenda_se/characters/princess_flavia) _romantic_ Flavia falls deeply in love with Rudolf (the king's double), believing him to be the king, creating a poignant and forbidden romance. ### [Colonel Sapt](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_prisoner_of_zenda_se/characters/colonel_sapt) _friendship_ Sapt recruits Rudolf to impersonate the king, forming a bond of trust and shared danger despite their initial unfamiliarity. ### [Black Michael](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_prisoner_of_zenda_se/characters/black_michael) _rivalry_ Michael sees Rudolf (as the king's double) as a direct threat to his coup, leading to intense enmity. ### [Princess Flavia](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_prisoner_of_zenda_se/characters/princess_flavia) _romantic_ Flavia falls deeply in love with Rudolf (the king's double), believing him to be the king, creating a poignant and forbidden romance. ## In the story ### [I: The Rassendylls—with a Word on the Elphbergs](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_prisoner_of_zenda_se/chapters/i-the-rassendylls-with-a-word-on-the-elphbergs) The narrator, a 29-year-old second son of the Rassendyll family, with red hair and a long nose inherited from the Elphbergs.
